Shah Alam is a planned city, and the plan shows in the aircond. The original town runs from Seksyen 1 to Seksyen 36, with the town centre in Seksyen 9 and 14 around Plaza Alam Sentral, SACC Mall, the Lake Gardens and the Blue Mosque. North of the Federal Highway sit the U-sections, Seksyen U1 to U20, which include Glenmarie (U1) and Bukit Jelutong (U8). The apartments and rented rooms around UiTM are the hardest-working aircond in Shah Alam. The double-storey and semi-detached houses built from the 2000s onward in Kota Kemuning (Seksyen 31 and 32), Bukit Jelutong and Alam Impian (Seksyen 35) carry five to eight inverter units each. Seksyen 2, 18, 19, 20 and 24 hold the government-planned terraces and low-rise flats of the 1980s and 1990s. The symptoms are familiar: the outdoor unit hums but the compressor will not start, the room takes an hour to cool, or the unit needed gas last year and is warm again. A yearly top-up on an R22 unit is a leak, not a maintenance item.
